Patrol

Ski Patrol

In case of an on-hill injury, place crossed skis uphill from the injured person(s). Alert ski patrol as soon as possible. You may call patrol from a personal cell phone, or from a radio if you have been issued one by JHMR. If a radio is available, call Valley Dispatch on channel 1. Make sure to communicate 3 key points to patrol: the location of the injured person(s); a physical description of the injured person(s) and suspected injury (ie: knee, shoulder, head).

After the injury occurs, try to make sure the injured party is as comfortable and warm as possible. Follow any instructions that ski patrol gives you, and never move a victim with a suspected spinal or head injury- leave that to the pros. Always contact a supervisor if it is one of your students.

Never put an injured student in the MSS snow machine for transport to the clinic- always use ski patrol.

Incident reports will be filled out by ski patrol rather than by an instructor.

WC

Worker's Compensation

Worker’s Compensation (WC) covers any injury that occurs while you are at work, performing work-related duties. Injuries that occur while free-skiing, recreating in the area, etc. are not eligible for WC. You have the right to file a WC claim if you suffer an injury while working, as long as you report the injury within 72hrs and follow these steps:

  1. Inform your supervisor about the injury ASAP.

  2. Complete Report of Injury paperwork at the Olympic Sports Plaza building (a.k.a. the “White House”) to open the claim and receive a claim number.

  3. Seek treatment at the Cody House clinic, and inform clinic staff that it is a workers comp injury. Complete urinalysis screening at this time.

Once you have opened a claim, make sure to provide your claim number to any healthcare provider(s) you may be referred to after the clinic. WC is a state-run program, and a Wyoming Worker's Comp rep will also be assigned to assist you. Wyoming Worker's Comp covers some lost wages, as follows:

  • If >3 days of work missed, WY Disability Pay begins on the 4th day of work missed.

  • If >7 days of work missed, WY Disability Pay begins on the 1st day of work missed.

If an employee misses 3 or fewer days due to a work-related injury, he/she may elect to use sick pay through JHMR if eligible (e.g., full time or dual seasonal staff). Sick pay info is available here. Please submit any JHMR sick pay requests to james.huffman@jacksonhole.com. Keep your lead/supervisor updated so they may adjust your schedule accordingly.

Out-Of-Bounds Access

Out-of-bounds skiing and riding with students is not allowed under any circumstances unless accompanied by a JHMR Backcountry Guide. The same applies for being out-of-bounds in uniform. JHMR neither encourages nor discourages personal backcountry use. MSS highly encourages JHMR employees to enroll in an AAI or AIARE course before beginning to explore the beautiful backcountry of the Tetons during your free time. Throughout the season, we will occasionally post info about avalanche education opportunities on the ProCard Message Board- stay tuned. New and seasoned backcountry users alike may use the beacon park off Rendezvous Trail throughout the season to keep beacon search skills fresh. Never exit the resort by ducking a rope; always use a backcountry gate. Respect any gate closures you may encounter, as they are sometimes necessary for Ski Patrol/SAR to conduct a rescue safely.
