Hello MSS family!
Welcome to Summer 2023 - it sure took its sweet time getting here. We hope this note finds you happy, healthy, and feeling refreshed after the winter.
MSS news:
It is with mixed emotions that we bid farewell to Julia Knowles. We are excited for her to embark on a new chapter in her career and saddened that she will no longer be a part of our team. Julia has been an invaluable part of the Mountain Sports School for the past nine years. Julia’s focus on the experience of our employees and her hard work have left a lasting impact on our team.
Some of Julia's key accomplishments during her tenure at the MSS include:
The successful transition from paper to electronic onboarding, streamlining our processes and enhancing efficiency.
Creating the MSS website, providing us with an online platform for information sharing and improving communication within our team.
The relocation of our warehouse operations from town to the Ram building
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Julia for her contributions to the MSS and JHMR and wish her the very best in all her future endeavors. Overheard from Julia: “the first part of retirement is fantastic!”
Julia plans on a summer full of adventures with her puppy, Kimchi, as she sets up her business to offer admin and communications support services.

We are excited to announce that James Huffman will be leading the MSS administration team moving forward. James has been an integral part of the MSS for the past five years and has played a vital role in our administrative success while working closely with Julia. With his experience and knowledge of our organization and systems, we are confident that James will help us continue to improve and evolve. Please join us in welcoming James to his new role and offering him your support as he takes on this important position at the MSS.
Also moving on from his current position is Kyle Peterson. Kyle came to the MSS in 2014, was selected for the Intermountain Ed Staff in 2017, and joined our management team in 2021 as a private lesson supervisor. His experience as a divisional trainer and a resort manager helped make our transition from a one person private lesson office to three-person team smooth. Kyle will be looking for ways to leverage his commitment to training excellence and being on the snow into his next passion project.
MSS summer operations are off and running! Our summer activities supervisor team - Richard Morse and Meg Lovely - have welcomed J-1 visa workers, local high school students and college students from across the country to the MSS family. Hailey Sentz has already had her first sold out day at Summer Camp. The Sound of Summer - delighted squeals of happy bungee jumping kids - is ON!
In early June, Via Ferrata supervisor Ryan Ravinsky - along with senior Via Ferrata guides Giles Augustine, Carol Viau and Mike Parri - participated in a High Angle Rescue Training with Mountain Patrol. Some wildly creative lowers were practiced.

Other News from around the Village:
“Free the Z!”- it’s happening. The project to straighten the South Pass switchbacks between Sublette and Thunder is underway. The first cut is done and at grade.

Bear Flats cabin is moving into the sunlight! The cabin is being moved from its current shady spot behind Sublette lift over to the bottom of Grand, just uphill of the toilets. You know what is there most of the time? Yup- sunshine! This will create an opportunity to have more upper mountain break spots and possibly food offerings. The footers for the new location have arrived should be in place by the end of this week.

Jackson Hole Sports will run Ladies’ Laps - an all-women downhill bike clinic, each Thursday this summer from 3-5 pm. The small group size and targeted skill development format is bound to elevate your riding skills. More details are available here.

Lastly, what is summertime without live outdoor music? Music in the Village kicks off this year on July 3rd with ZOSO, a renowned Led Zeppelin tribute band. That will be followed the next day with more music under the sky with Head for the Hills and Strumbucket playing to celebrate our nation’s holiday! See our events calendar for times and details.
