Hello Mountain Sports School Team,
I woke up this morning excited and humbled to begin my tenure as the Director of the Mountain Sports School. I want to thank Kerch for his mentorship and friendship over the past seven years. It has truly been a pleasure to learn and grow under his leadership. I believe I speak for everyone when I say that we all hope his threats are genuine and he will come back to teach next winter.
It is an honor and a privilege to lead the Jackson Hole Mountain Sports School. The legacy of Directors is inspiring to say the least. I have been fortunate to work with Brian Maguire and Jim Kercher throughout my 19-year career at JHMR. They were both generous with their knowledge and passed along invaluable, and in Brian’s case often indecipherable, wisdom. While I did not have an opportunity to work with Pepi, I did have a conversation with him this spring. When we were saying our goodbyes, he gave me one piece of advice: “Do not be too strict with the school.” I will remind myself of his advice along with my favorites from Jim, “Fail forward,” and Brian, “If you have to work, you might as well have some fun.” I have distilled their advice down to Learn, Have Fun, and Be Adaptable. I invite you all to join me in honoring their legacy by prioritizing learning, having fun, and being adaptable every day.
Creating and managing relationships is at the heart of what we do as educators. We know that what we provide for our guests is more than a lesson: it is an authentic Jackson Hole experience. As we prepare for the upcoming season, our continuing focus will be exceeding the expectations of our guests and co-workers by creating experiences that change people, bring joy, and create lasting memories.
My commitment to you is that I will work for you, and with you, to ensure you have the support you need to create those experiences. I also want you to know that I am always available to listen to and discuss your questions, concerns, ideas, and issues. Creating a culture of open, transparent, and ongoing communication is one of my priorities and will be critical to our continued success.
I am extremely grateful to be working with all of you. You are the most talented, passionate Mountain Sports School team in the industry. Your commitment to creating incredible, memorable experiences and sharing your love for Jackson Hole is inspiring, and it is what makes our school so special.
Sincerely,
Matt Clos, MSS Director
